The Ancient Theatre of Aspendos is one of the best-preserved ancient theatre structures of the Roman period, located only 38 km from our hotel in the Serik district of Antalya. Visiting this magnificent structure is like going on a fascinating journey through both history and architecture. Aspendos was a Pisidian city founded in the 10th century B.C. and was of great cultural and commercial importance, especially during the Roman Empire. This theatre is the most important building symbolising the glory and power of Aspendos.
The History and Construction of Theatre
The construction of the Ancient Theatre of Aspendos dates back to the period of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, i.e. 161-180 AD. Built by an architect named Zeno, this theatre is a highly developed and unique structure, unlike the typical theatre structures of the Roman period. In particular, the acoustics of the theatre are still highly appreciated even today.
The purpose of building the theatre was both to hold public performances and to symbolise the loyalty and prestige of Aspendos to the Roman Empire. Since Aspendos became an important cultural centre during the Roman period, the theatre also became the centre of these cultural events.
Architectural Features and Structure
The Aspendos Theatre is one of the largest theatres of the Roman Empire with a capacity of between 7,000-10,000 people. The structure of the theatre is semicircular and designed to leave an open space between the stage and the audience. This open space was built in such a way that the sound reached all the audience very clearly, and thus the theatre had tremendous acoustics.
The spectacular stone structures of the theatre, the stage building (scaenae frons) and the backdrops are still very well preserved. The stage building is impressive with its architectural details and designed as 4 storeys. The walls behind the stage building are finely carved and decorated with motifs reflecting the aesthetic understanding of the period.
The front part, called the orchestra, is the area where the performances are held and where the sound spreads perfectly, providing acoustics, and being one of the most interesting features of the theatre. The stone pavements in this area are designed to ensure that the sound is evenly distributed to every corner of the theatre.
Acoustic Feature and Modern Use
Perhaps the most striking feature of the Ancient Theatre of Aspendos is its acoustics. Every sound made in this theatre reaches the audience exactly across the stage, and even today, music and theatre performances can be performed without the use of high-quality sound systems. Because of this, Aspendos has become not only an archaeological site, but also a popular venue for concerts and events. Concerts, festivals and cultural events held inside the theatre offer visitors the opportunity to witness history while creating a unique atmosphere combined with modern art.
The Restoration Works and The Current Situation
Although the ancient theatre of Aspendos has been damaged by natural disasters and human interventions over time, it has been well-preserved thanks to the restoration efforts of the Turkish government. Since the 1980s, restorations have preserved the structural integrity of the theatre, repaired the stage and generally made the theatre available to the audience again. Today, major concerts, operas and theatre performances are still held here.
The Areas Surrounding the Theatre and Other Buildings
There are other important ancient buildings of the region in the areas surrounding the Ancient Theatre of Aspendos. These include structures such as the Basilica (great church), Agoras and aqueducts. The Aspendos Aqueduct is a great marvel of engineering built to meet the city's water needs. These structures provide a closer understanding of the life of the city around the theatre and the Roman infrastructure of the region.
Visits and Events
The Ancient Theatre of Aspendos is a great place to visit for both history buffs and those interested in culture and art events. The size and impressiveness of the theatre draws you deeper into history at every step. At the same time, thanks to the international festivals and concerts held in the theatre, visitors have the opportunity to experience not only history but also a vibrant culture.
